Memorial Day Ceremony

Smithfield, NC-- Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those men and women who have died while serving in our nation’s military – a day to remember their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their families for our nation’s freedom.

The Johnston County Council of Veterans Organizations is sponsoring a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 28, 2018 in Smithfield, NC. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 am inside the courthouse.

The guest speaker will be NC Senator and Retired US Army Colonel Ronald J Rabin.

Memorial Day is traced back to the mid 1800’s when spontaneous gatherings took place to honor the war dead after the Civil War. It was originally called Decoration Day in 1868. On May 26, 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a Presidential Proclamation naming Waterloo, NY, as the birthplace of Memorial Day. Congress adopted Memorial Day as a federal holiday with the National Holiday Act of 1971 establishing the holiday as the last Monday in May.

We encourage all veterans in Johnston County to come out and take part in the Memorial Day remembrance event. Veterans, please participate even if you are not a member of any veterans’ organizations.

We invite all the citizens of Johnston County to come and to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the armed services of the United States. Also, in accordance with Public Law 110-181 SEC.598, Congress authorized the Secretary of Defense to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. To that end, The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration has been formed and more information can be found at
