WWII Veteran and Former POW, Wilbert “Pete” Sellers
Smithfield, NC -- On July 8th, 2018, WWII veteran and former POW, Wilbert “Pete” Sellers will be presented with medals he earned while serving in the military. The 95-year-old Army veteran and Smithfield native served with the 232nd Infantry Regiment in the European Theater. In January of 1945, his unit was involved with slowing the German advance during the Battle of the Bulge. The unit was overwhelmed and Sellers was captured, as well as many others of his unit. Among the medals that will be presented to him are a few that he never received.
The ceremony will begin at approximately 12:15 pm (after services) at the First Christian Church, 1001 S Crescent Dr, Smithfield, NC 27577. NC State Representative Donna White will be in attendance.
The awards are a result of the efforts of the Veterans’ Legacy Foundation based in North Carolina. The foundation helps veterans and their families obtain the recognition they deserve, so that their military legacy can be passed on to future generations. John Elskamp the founder of Veterans’ Legacy Foundation feels that the hard work that his organization does pays off with presentations such as this one. It’s a chance to celebrate these brave military veterans for their accomplishments and to say “Thank You.”
