NC Sweet Potato Commission Receives Industry Appreciation Award

NC Sweet Potato Commission Receives Industry Appreciation Award

Smithfield NC – On Monday, the Johnston County Commissioners and the Johnston County Economic Development Advisory Board recognized the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission and the Johnston County famers they represent for their long standing commitment to Johnston County by honoring the organization with the County’s “Industry Appreciation” award. This award will be presented quarterly to Johnston County Industries.

“Johnston County has had a rich farming heritage,” stated Tony Braswell, Chairman of the Johnston County Board of Commissioners. “Often, citizens think about traditional manufacturing when the word industry is used. However Johnston County farmers produce $280 Million annually and $35 Million of that comes from our Sweet Potato growers.

The North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission Inc. is a nonprofit corporation made up of over 400 sweet potato growers along with the packers, processors and business associates that support them. The sole purpose of the commission is to increase sweet potato consumption through education, promotional activities, research and honorable horticultural practices among its producers. Thanks to the six sweet potato farmers that chartered the commission in 1961, the commission has supported its growers and maintained North Carolina as the No. 1 sweet potato producing state in the United States since 1971.

“We have more working farms in Johnston County than any other County in the State,” expressed Bryant Spivey, NC Cooperative Director for Johnston County. “We are very appreciative for the great working relationship with the Johnston County Economic Development office and the commitment from the Johnston County Commissioners to not only recognize the Sweet Potato growers, but all of our farmers.”

In 2015, the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission (NCSPC) appointed Kelly McIver executive director of the commission. In her previous position, Kelly worked with NCSPC in her role in the NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services - International Marketing Department where she assisted the NCSPC and other state agriculture groups to open and develop export markets around the world. Kelly supports the work of the commission in planning, executing and evaluating research and educational programs developed to promote and market North Carolina sweet potatoes.

For more information about the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission, they are located at 700 E Parrish Drive, Suite C in Benson. You can also contact them at 919-894-1067 or visit their website at www.ncsweetpotatoes.com
