SMITHFIELD, NC –CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE: CTL), an industry leader in residential gigabit deployment, today announced that it is continuing to expand its 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) ultra-fast fiber optic network to residential and small business customers in select areas of Smithfield and invites its customers to join the gigabit community.
CenturyLink began offering fiber-enabled gigabit service to some business customers in the Smithfield area in 2015 and has invested millions of dollars in enhancing its network and increasing speed capabilities across parts of North Carolina. CenturyLink is using fiber-to-the-premises technology to provide speeds up to 1 Gbps, equivalent to 1,000 Mbps. These speeds are symmetrical, allowing customers to upload information as fast as they download it.
Homes with gigabit service have the same power as leading-edge businesses. These speeds allow users to stream high-definition video content with little to no delays and download movies, songs and TV shows in seconds. Residential customers who have multiple devices connected to one internet connection in the home will still have more than enough capacity and speed to upload and share files and photos as well as support other uses of broadband such as online gaming, home automation systems and increasingly important cloud services. Gigabit speeds will also help small businesses increase productivity and efficiency while working in the cloud, sharing multimedia files, streaming video content and backing-up data in real-time.
“CenturyLink is pleased to provide customers in Smithfield with ultra-fast broadband speeds up to 1 gigabit per second to help keep pace with today’s bandwidth demands,” said Rondi Furgason, Vice President of Operations in North Carolina. “With the proliferation of the Internet of Things and the connection of everyday objects to the Internet and to one another, we are pleased to deliver speeds that can support these new technologies. This investment in our network demonstrates our commitment to deliver innovative technology that enhances our customers’ quality of life, now and into the future.”
CenturyLink has one of the largest fiber-enabled gigabit networks in the country and is an industry leader in the number of homes it has enabled with fiber technology capable of uploading and downloading information at speeds up to 1 Gbps. Residential customers can purchase
1 Gbps service for a monthly recurring charge of $79.95 with a 12-month term commitment and when bundled with additional, qualifying CenturyLink services, including Prism® TV. In addition to speeds up to 1 Gbps, some customers may be eligible for speeds up to 40 and 100 Mbps. Customers should contact CenturyLink at 919-552-0900 or visit their closest retail store located at 1330 E. Broad St., Fuquay Varina to see what speeds are available to them.
