Selma Mayor to Chair County Economic Development Board

Smithfield, N.C. – June 6, 2016.  Selma Mayor Cheryl Oliver will chair the Johnston County Economic Development Advisory Board. The 14-member board elected Oliver unanimously at its May 18th meeting.

“Mayor Oliver brings a wealth of experience from both government and business, and our program will benefit from that unique perspective, as well as from her steadfast leadership skills,” said Chris Johnson, director of the Johnston County Office of Economic Development.

Oliver is now in her third term as Mayor of Selma. She previously served for four years on the Selma Town Council. The retired director of AT&T’s Strategic Marketing and Online Operations Organization joined the Johnston County Economic Development Advisory Board in 2014. She has held leadership roles with the Triangle J Council of Governments, Johnston County Industries, and the Boys and Girls Club of Johnston County. She also chairs the Transportation Advisory Committee of the Upper Coastal Plain Rural Planning Organization, an association of local leaders that works with the N.C. Department of Transportation in setting transportation priorities across a four-county region.

“Transportation and economic development go hand-in-hand,” says Oliver, whose interest in economic development stems largely from her experiences as a municipal leader. “Economic development is going to be a major focus for any mayor,” she says. Small-business finance is another area of interest for her. “It’s important that everything be in the mix,” says Oliver.

As chairman of the Johnston County Economic Development Advisory Board, Oliver succeeds Allen Wellons, a Smithfield attorney and former state senator. “I’m really honored to be chosen to succeed Allen,” Oliver says. “He has been an exemplary leader who is always very professional on every issue that comes up. It has been a privilege to work with him.”

The Board meets six times a year to monitor and guide the county’s efforts to recruit, retain and grow businesses, create jobs and attract economic investment. Its voluntary members bring expertise in business, local government, education and community affairs. Each is elected by vote of the Johnston County Board of Commissioners.

The Johnston County Economic Development Office (JCEDO) facilitates value-added interaction between government, education and the private sector in encouraging and promoting job creation and economic investment in Johnston County. A unit of county government, JCEDO collaborates with local, regional and statewide partners and allies in providing confidential location assistance to businesses and technical support to the county’s 11 municipalities. Its menu of services includes customized digital mapping, labor and wage analysis, site readiness assistance and incentive packaging. For additional information, visit www.jcnced.com
