Services and Utilities

All utility rates in Johnston County are determined by location, and the rates vary by service provider. Utilities available in most areas of Johnston County include:

  • Water and sewer
  • Electricity
  • Natural Gas
  • Telecommunications (telephone, high-speed Internet access, etc.)


 

Telephone and Telegraph

Telephone services are provided by Sprint, AT&T and CenturyLink. Telegraph services are provided by Western Union.
 

Mail Delivery

United States Post Offices are located in all municipalities except Archers Lodge.
 

Police Protection

Police protection is provided by the Sheriff's Office as well as the municipal police forces. There are 24 fire departments and fire insurance ratings can be found at http://www.johnstonnc.com/mainpage.cfm?category_level_id=582&content_id=768. There is countywide coordination of fire protection service provided to industry beyond the city limits.
 

Electricity

Smithfield, Selma, Benson and Clayton have municipal electricity services. In other areas of the county, electricity is provided by Progress Energy, the Electric Membership Corporation, and the South River Electric Membership Corporation.
 

Natural Gas

The North Carolina Natural Gas Corporation serves Benson, Clayton, Smithfield, Selma, and the I-40/NC-42 interchange area. Expansion is ongoing.
 

Waste Management

The county operates convenience sites and a Landfill for waste disposal and recycling. Some of the individual towns also offer waste disposal and recycling. More information can be found at http://www.johnstonnc.com/recycling.
