Services Provided or Description:  

Vocational rehabilitation serves individuals who have a chronic disability that keeps them from getting or keeping a job. The primary goal is to assist the person to become employed and retain their employment for at least 90 days.

Services are varied and numerous, but all are oriented toward employment. Services provided that are not based on income include:

  • Counseling and guidance
  • Vocational evaluation
  • Employment and marketing skills
  • Job placement
  • Follow-up services

Hours:  Monday through Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Ages Served:  All

Eligibility:  Individuals must have a physical or mental impairment that constitutes or results in a substantial impediment to employment. They must be able to benefit from vocational rehabilitation services in terms of an employment outcome. They must require vocational rehabilitation services to prepare for, and engage in or retain, gainful employment.

Referral Process:  

Call the VR Office at 919-934-0525 to be scheduled for the next orientation class. For those who are under the age of 18 or who have been declared incompetent, a parent or guardian must be present to sign all application forms and releases.

The following items must be brought to the orientation class or intake appointment:

  • Social security number
  • A form of identification
  • Family income (if cost services are being requested)
  • Previous employers and dates of employment
  • Medical information to support the disabilities

Billing Arrangements:  There are no fees to apply for vocational rehabilitation services, but individuals must meet financial criteria to receive cost services, once eligible.

Bilingual?  Written materials are available in Spanish and an interpreter can be provided when necessary.
