Biographical Sketch:  Thomas Lockhart, Jr., born circa 1795, was a planter and leading member of Smithfield Baptist Church following its establishment in 1832. He married twice, first to Temperance Eason in 1817 and secondly to Edith Tharp in 1838. Several items in the collection were handed down through his daughter, Harriet Lockhart, who married Augustus Jones of Wake County in 1843. The Joneses were living in what is now Wilson's Mills Township, Johnston County, NC, when Union forces occupied the area in 1865. The items were then handed down to their daughter, Olivia Jones Ennis, who passed them to her daughter Harriet "Hattie" Ennis Pettway. Mrs. Pettway was the mother of the donor. Letters, land records dating to the 18th century, and other papers from this family were passed down through descendants of George L. Jones, son of Augustus and Harriet Lockhart Jones, and are found in a separate collection bearing the name Lockhart-Jones Papers.

Collection Description:  The collection includes artifacts from several generations of the Thomas Lockhart, Jr. family, including a pewter coffee pot, silverware buried in an abandoned well prior to the invasion of Union forces in 1865, locks of hair from relatives and friends, women's tools and utensils, and several books. A photograph album compiled by Hattie Ennis in 1885 contains numerous unidentified photographs from the Lockhart, Jones, and Ennis families, including Confederate soldiers in uniform.
