What is Metadata?

We often hear, "What in the world is metadata?" To put it simply, metadata is basically data about data. Metadata describes the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data. This information can tell you the how, what, where, and why the data was created. Our metadata complies with Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) standards.

Metadata	Brief Description
Historical Aerial Photos View Metadata	Johnston County was provided with 1937- 1988 aerial photos, black and white imagery. The scale of each aerial photo image is 1:1320'. These aerial photos were provided by Johnston County Soil and Water Conservation District. File Format is pdf. Click here to view web application.
Centerline View Metadata	The centerline file is a countywide dataset that contains roads, road names, and addressing range information. The data was created to assist in locating roads, locating addresses, E911 dispatch, network and routing applications. The data was created by using the right of way lines from cadastral maps using on-screen digitizing methods. File Format is SHAPEFILE. Click here to view a sample Centerline image.
City Limits View Metadata	Johnston County maintains a seamless layer of all the corporate limits of the towns within the county boundary. The file is referenced to the North American Datum 1983 (NAD83), state plane grid coordinates, feet. The city limit boundary is mapped from recorded plats and written descriptions. Fire Districts View Metadata	This data shows locational boundaries of the twenty four fire districts that encompass the county. This data assists with the listing of a property within a fire district. It is used by E911 dispatch to assign properties to the appropriate fire station for emergency dispatch. 1995 Orthophotos View Metadata	Johnston County maintains a layer of digital orthophotos, black and white imagery. The aerial flight was flown in the spring of 1995. The orthophotos are tiled to correspond to the tax map grid layout. The scale of each ortho image is 1:4800, 5000 x 5000 pixel resolution. The images on the ftp site have been resampled to one megabyte from the original 25 megabytes. File Format is TIFF. Click here to view a sample Ortho image.
2001 Orthophotos View Metadata	Countywide orthophotos consist of a tiff file format, one file for each 1"=200' tax map. Pixel size represents .5' on the ground, images are 97meg per tax map grid coverage area, black and white. No attributes available. Each tiff has a corresponding "TFW" file that contains geographic coordinate system information. These orthos were produced from an aerial flight in 2001. Click here to view a sample Ortho image.
2005 Orthophotos View Metadata	Countywide orthophotos consist of a tiff file format, one file for each 1"=200' tax map. Pixel size represents .5' on the ground, images are 286meg per tax map grid coverage area, color. No attributes available. Each tiff has a corresponding "TFW" file that contains geographic coordinate system information. These orthos were produced from an aerial flight in 2005. Click here to view a sample Ortho image.
Rescue Districts View Metadata	This data has locational boundaries of the rescue response districts that encompass the entire county. This data assists in assigning the appropriate response to each property to be used by E911 in their dispatching services. File Format is SHAPEFILE. Tax Parcels View Metadata	Johnston County maintains a tax map consisting of property lines mapped from recorded deeds and plats. The files are referenced to the North American Datum 1983 (NAD83), state plane grid coordinates, feet. Each tax map represents a 10,000 x 10,000 foot grid square. The scale of each tax map is 1:4800. The tax maps are designed for tax assessment purposes and are not of surveyor accuracy. File format is SHAPEFILE and attributes are available in dbf. Click here to view a sample Tax Parcels image.
Town Planning Boundaries (ETJ) View Metadata	Johnston County maintains a town planning boundary map that contains a boundary of each town's extra-territorial jurisdiction located within Johnston County. The planning area extends one mile from the main city limit boundary and follows property lines or physical features. This file was created in 1998 by using recorded survey maps. Township Boundaries View Metadata	The dataset contains the township boundary lines of Johnston County. The purpose is to indicate the boundary lines of each township within the county. A user can identify a desired boundary or determine which township boundary a parcel is located within. The dataset is comprised of a single line which outlines the townships and their tag. Water District Boundaries View Metadata	The dataset contains boundary information on water districts created across Johnston County. The data was created as a depiction of the water service boundary in which water usage fees are collected and public water distribution is provided. Boundaries align with property lines and other natural features where feasible. Some boundaries are offset from road right of ways. File format is SHAPEFILE.
