What can be Recycled at the Convenience Centers

At this time a decal is not required to recycle the following items. Please sort these recyclable materials from your regular garbage:

  • Glass - Bottles and jars only. Separate clear, brown, and green colors. Remove lids and rinse clean.

     

  • Plastic - Soft drink bottles and milk jugs only. Remove lids and rinse clean.

     

  • Aluminum - Beverage cans only. Rinse clean.

     

  • Newspaper - Newspaper print only. Remove all strings and bags.

     

  • Magazines - Remove all strings and bags. No phone books.

     

  • Corrugated Cardboard - Corrugated cardboard only. Remove all packing material and flatten boxes.

Containers are provided at the Convenience Centers to dispose of the following items:

  • Tires - Limited to four per week. Tractor tires and large truck tires are accepted at the landfill only. You are responsible for unloading your tires.

     

  • Appliances - Limited to two per week. You are responsible for unloading your appliance.

     

  • Lead Batteries - Limited to three per week.

     

  • Waste Motor Oil - Limited to five gallons per week.

You may also take the above items to the landfill, but as separate items. They must be separated from your regular garbage.

What Must be Taken to the Landfill

Some wastes are not acceptable at the Convenience Centers because of federal law or local county ordinances. The following items are not accepted at the Convenience Center sites, and must be taken to the landfill:

  • Dead animals
  • Land clearing debris (trees or stumps)
  • Large loads of waste
  • Yard waste (logs, limbs or leaves)
  • Shingles, construction or building material
  • Antifreeze

All items taken to the landfill are subject to a weight limitation. For more information about these items or any other questionable items, please call the Johnston County Solid Waste Division at 919-938-4750.

What Cannot be taken to either the Convenience Centers or the Landfill

Some wastes are not acceptable at either the Convenience Centers or the Landfill because of federal law or local county ordinances. These items are as follows:

  • All liquids
  • Fire, embers or hot ashes
  • Hazardous waste or unknown wastes
  • Poisons, herbicides or pesticides

PLEASE KEEP OUR COMMUNITY CLEAN! Littering is punishable by state law and county ordinance. To report littering or illegal dumping, call the Sheriff's Department at 919-989-5010.
