2015 Regional Area IV Envirothon Winners

 

The West Johnston High School Envirothon Team, called the “Edmundson Quadrangle ‘Quokkas’ placed first at the regional Area IV Envirothon and placed 2nd  at the NC Envirothon Competition where they had the highest scores in Aquatics, Soils and the Oral Presentation Problem out of  47 teams across the state.   Members of the team, posing with their medallions and plaque include:  (from left to right) Team Advisor – Melody Lineberger,  Team members Lindsay Barnes, Marco Agostini, Jeremy Mayer, Tim Bizzell, Amelia Faith Turner and NC Envirothon Vice Chairman Rich Hayes and NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts President Manly West.  The Envirothon is the largest environmental science competition in North America where five-member teams complete training and testing in five subject areas:  Soils, Aquatics, Forestry, Wildlife and Current Environmental Issues.  The students compete in their knowledge of natural resource management, identification and critical thinking skills relating to environmental concerns.   Ms. Lineberger, Team Advisor and science teacher at West Johnston High School, has led  past Envirothon teams in winning three state championships and attending three North American competitions.  As winners, the students are eligible for scholarships and cash prizes.  The Envirothon is sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.   For more information about the Envirothon Program, visit the website, www.ncenvirothon.org.
