WE'LL BE CLOSED NOV. 26-27 FOR THANKSGIVING

The Heritage Center will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26-27 for Thanksgiving holidays but we'll be open as usual Saturday, Nov. 28.

GRIST MILLS THE FOCUS OF CURRENT EXHIBIT

The Heritage Center has a new exhibit on Johnston County's grist mills. Most of them are gone now, but remnants of some remain - reminders of the region's deep agrarian roots. The exhibit includes a map labeling the locations of known mills, and folks are encouraged to come take a look and tell us about others for which we have no records. For more information about this and other exhibits now showing, follow this link

AERIAL PHOTOS FROM 1930s ONWARD ONLINE

The County of Johnston Web site now offers an online look at aerial photographs kept by the Johnston Soil and Water Conservation District that date back to the late 1930s. Pictures of the landscape were taken from airplanes in 1939, 1949, 1965, 1971, and 1985. Not every segment of the county was photographed every one of those years, but pictures were made for many areas for most years. You can view what's available after proceeding to the following page on the county's Web site: http://www.johnstonnc.com/files/gis/old_orthos/index.php.
