Volunteer to Help

What is recycling? Why is it necessary? How do landfills work? These questions are answered in a Uses of Refuses presentation created by Susan Woodard of the Soil and Water Conservation District.

There are numerous volunteer opportunities throughout the year to help keep Johnston County beautiful. Listed below are some of these options.

The Governor's Spring Sweep

This Litter Sweep is an annual statewide roadside litter cleanup drive sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Governor Beverly Perdue. Click on the links below for more information.

North Carolina Big Sweep

The North Carolina Big Sweep is an annual coastal cleanup project. Last year, volunteers from all 100 North Carolina counties and 90 countries worldwide participated. The North Carolina Big Sweep is an award-winning 501(c)(3) grassroots non-profit organization whose mission is a litter-free environment.

Keep Johnston County Beautiful Campaign

Keep Johnston County Beautiful, Inc. is a community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement and protection of the natural and historic resources in Johnston County. It was organized into a non-profit in 1978, and is comprised of members and volunteers throughout Johnston County.

Adopt-a-Highway Program

The North Carolina Department of Transportation established the Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) program in 1988 in response to growing public concern regarding litter along the highways. The AAH program is a joint effort between community volunteers and the NCDOT.

There are several contests and awards at national, state, and county levels for individual and groups who are promoting awareness of recycling and environmental issues.
