2017 Shred Event



As an ongoing effort to help the citizens of Johnston County from Identity Theft, Craig Olive and the Johnston County Register of Deeds office, is organizing a “Public Shred” Event.  Identity Theft is the fastest growing crime in America.  Every three seconds someone’s identity is stolen.  According to the NCDOJ, North Carolina is ranked 29th among states. And according to Javelin Strategy and Research in 2016, in North Carolina, it’s estimated that about 400,000 people are victimized annually.

The public is encouraged to bring old files, receipts, credit card offers, bank statements, returned checks and any other sensitive information that they want to discard. 

The event will be held on June 3, 2017, from 10am-1pm, in the IGA parking lot, 721 N Brightleaf Blvd., Smithfield, NC. 

Along with Craig Olive and the Johnston County Register of Deeds office, other sponsors include:  WMPM and WTSB radio stations, Local Government and Federal Credit Union, Edwards/Carlie C’s IGA and Interstate Outdoor.  For more information call (919) 989-5160.

Back in 2009, Olive was credited with getting a tougher Identity Theft Protection bill passed in North Carolina.  Register of Deeds across North Carolina may go on and cover up sensitive number and info on public documents on the Internet.  Olive stated, “That he will continue to be an advocate for the citizens of Johnston County in preventing Identity theft”.
