Resource Conservation Workshop

The Resource Conservation Workshop is a five day summer intensive for rising 11th and 12th grade students with an interest in agriculture or natural resources-soils, aquatics, wildlife, forestry, and more. The 2024 workshop will be hosted at NC State University on June 16-21, 2024.

Johnston Soil and Water Conservation District encourages rising juniors and seniors to apply for a $575 scholarship to attend the RCW.  

Deadline: Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 5 p.m.

Applications and a student essay with an adult (teacher, pastor, scout leader, work supervisor, etc., but not student's parents) letter of recommendation should be emailed to Annette M Adams or sent USPS or hand deliver to:

Previous attendees will not be eligible to participate. No high school graduates are allowed to participate.

*The application process is competitive, which involves the District reviewing all essays from the applicants on the following: Explain their interest in natural resources; the reason why they would like to attend RCW; what their career plans are and/or how they will apply conservation in their life; and why this student is the best candidate.

The workshop provides a unique experience for students to be exposed to various natural resource fields, such as soil and water conservation, wildlife and fisheries, forestry, water quality and watershed management. At the conclusion of the workshop, students are tested on their knowledge, and top scorers are awarded cash prizes and scholarships. Students with top scores on test review will receive monetary awards:

1st place $100 in cash plus a $500 scholarship*

2nd place $100 in cash plus a $275 scholarship*

3rd place $100 in cash

4th place $75 in cash

5th place $50 in cash

In addition, the following scholarships are also offered: 

NC District Employees Association Scholarship ($1000) - based on student achievement, counselor recommendation and interviews.

Grady Lane Scholarship ($500) plus $100 cash - based on student achievement, counselor recommendation and interviews.

 *Please note that scholarship funds are received when the student enrolls in college, and must be claimed within 5-years of the award date.

Johnston Soil & Water Conservation District Vice-Chairman, Charles Hill presented Sam Lowry, Johnston's RCW attendee with his check for unsponsored meals in the amount of $110 which was made possible by United Community Bank. Johnston SWCD sponsored Sam's tuition in the amount of $450.
