Smithfield, NC – The Johnston County Health Department reported an outbreak today of six cases of COVID-19 associated with Johnston Correctional Institution located in Smithfield, NC. Three inmates and three staff members have been confirmed positive. A COVID-19 outbreak in a congregate setting is defined as two or more laboratory confirmed cases.

In The Johnston County Public Health Department has provided the following information as of 4:00 p.m. today:

38% - Confirmed cases who are male (total of 38)
62% - Confirmed cases who are female (total of 63)

6 - Female between ages 18 – 24
10 - Male between ages 25 – 49
16 - Female between ages 25 – 49
15 - Male between ages 50 – 64
16 - Female between ages 50 – 64

  • 33 current and/or former residents (includes 6 deaths)
  • 11 staff reside in Johnston County
  • 7 staff reside in other counties
