Checking On The Elderly During The Cold Spell Infographic

Family Members and Neighbors should check in on the elderly population.

  • Phone calls are sometimes not enough.
  • It's better to physically visit them.

Many Elders want to feel independent and may not give a true representation of their conditions over the phone.

  • Is their heating system working?
  • Do they have enough food?
  • Do they have enough meds?

Effects of Cold Temps on The Elderly

  • Cold Weather can increase symptoms for Diabetics
  • Hypothermia is common, as many elders cannot feel the cold, do not dress properly, or cannot regulate their own temperature.
  • Dehydration is common, as the elderly tend to drink too little.
  • Vulnerability to cold weather increases when elders have poor nutrition, have chronic illnesses, or take certain medications.
