Driving in Snow and Ice Infographic

Avoid driving in inclement weather, but if you have to....

Take it SLOW in the SNOW

  1. When skidding on ice, avoid pressing the gas or brakes. If the vehicle starts to spin, steer into the direction of the spin and try to regain control when your speed decreases.
  2. Apply firm, steady pressure on the pedal when braking and avoid coming to a complete stop, especially when going uphill.
  3. Accelerate and Decelerate Slowly, keeping an 8 to 10 second following distance. Remember that it takes longer to slow down on ice.
  4. Fill up your gas tank to at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up and to have a reserve for emergency use.  Also, winterize you vehicle.
  5. Never use cruise control on slippery surfaces, including icy or wet roadways.  Cruise control not only increases your chances of hydroplaning, but it much more dangerous.
