Civil War Records

During the American Civil War, 1861-1865, roughly 1,500 men from Johnston County either volunteered or were conscripted to serve in the Confederate Army. This searchable database contains information compiled by Confederate veteran William N. Rose in 1899-1900, as well as information culled from North Carolina Troops, a multi-volume series published by the Publications Section of the NC Division of Archives and History.

The list of Johnston County men who served in the Union army is incomplete. William Rains Lee, a former Confederate, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1864. The following Johnston natives served in the U.S. Colored Troops:

Charles Canada, enlisted 3 July 1863, Co. D, 3rd U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery

Calvin Sanders, enlisted 24 Feb. 1864, Co. K, 47th U.S. Colored Infantry

Prince Boland (Boylan?), enlisted 21 Jan. 1865, 3rd U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery

Joseph Smith II, enlisted 4 March 1865, Co. E, 30th U.S. Colored Infantry; died 14 April 1865, Wilmington, NC
