As October 1, 2011, approaches with the new fee increases in the Register of Deeds Office across North Carolina, I have discovered extra hidden fees that were pushed by the North Carolina Association of Register of Deeds.

Smithfield NC- Effective November 1, 2010, citizens of Johnston County can obtain their birth certificates, if they were born in another North Carolina County.
Linda Brinkley, State Registrar and Director of Vital Records of North Carolina announced this new program. The cost of obtaining a birth certificate with this new system will cost $24.00. The Johnston County Register of Deeds, will resume Passport Operations on a limited basis starting Monday January 11th, 2021.
Passport operations had been suspended on December 15th, 2020 due to COVID-19, but The Register of Deeds Craig Olive feels his office can safely start accepting passport applications as soon as next week.
