Deputy Sheriff Clendon Paul West Sr.
Age: 27

End of Watch: Monday, September 11, 1995
Cause: GunfireDeputy West was shot and killed after he and another deputy went to a mobile home park to verify the address of a man wanted on several warrants. Another deputy was also shot and wounded. The suspect was apprehended two days later at a city rail station in New York City.
The suspect was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to death on June 20, 1996.
Deputy West is survived by his wife and two sons.
On Friday, June 24, 2016, the NC Department of Transportation, with the support of Johnston County Commissioners and the Smithfield Town Council, agreed to rename the bridge over the Neuse River on US70 (Market Street) in his memory. “Our brother Paul West is gone but never forgotten,” his sister Angie West said. The ceremony ended with the unveiling of the new bridge sign.
