New book about Selma pilot whose plane crashed, carrying atomic bombs

Smithfield, NC, October 30, 2023:

Author Linda Harris Sittig of Pittsboro will be at the Johnston County Museum in Smithfield on Thursday, November 9, 6 pm, to talk about her new award-winning book, B-52 DOWN: The Night the Bombs Fell From the Sky.

The book chronicles the riveting true story of a community-wide effort to overcome incredible odds to rescue the crew of a B-52 Bomber. The aircraft went down in western Maryland during a blizzard in January 1964, carrying two nuclear bombs on board. The co-pilot of the crew, Parker Peedin, hailed from Selma, N.C.

Sittig grew up in the Mid-Atlantic states and put down her adult roots in Virginia and North Carolina. During her 36 years of teaching teachers and children, she also managed to fuel her life passion for writing. Her numerous freelance articles, newspaper column, blog, and five published books have garnered her several awards at local, state, and international levels. Her stories have appeared in the Washington Post, Chicken Soup for the Soul, and other publications. All her books have 5-star ratings, and her monthly blog, http://www.strongwomeninhistory.com, is followed in over 64 countries.
