How to Apply for a Building Permit

Submit the following items

• Completed Application Form
  • Residential Permit Application
  • Commercial Permit Application
•  Completed site plan
•  Construction Drawings (Digital format only. No paper plans will be accepted)
•  Copy of septic permit
•  Copy of well permit or receipt from Public Utilities showing the water tap is paid
•  Lien agent form from www.liensnc.com

Permit Applications and Plan Submittal

Applications for permits and plans will be accepted as follows:

• By email to inspections@johnstonnc.gov
• Dropped off at the Building Inspections office in the Land Use Center, 309 E Market Street, Smithfield, NC.
   *If permit applications are being dropped off, a digital form of the plans will need to be included*

Payment Methods

• Credit card (we accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover). 
• Check made to Johnston County Inspections
