Smithfield, NC – General Statute 143-215.1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.

In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in the affected county:

The Central Johnston County wastewater collection system had a discharge of untreated wastewater on June 20-21, 2019 of an estimated 84,000 gallons from a force main in the vicinity of 101 NC 210, Smithfield, NC.  The untreated wastewater discharged into the Neuse River and into a pond that drains into the Neuse River.  The spill was caused by an air release valve failure.  The spill was reported to the Johnston County Department of Utilities at 10:30 pm on June 20, 2019 and ended at 3:30 am on June 21, 2019.

The Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on June 20, 2019 and is reviewing the matter.  For more information, contact the Johnston County Public Utilities Department at (919) 989-5075.
