Nonpartisan Board of Education Primary not Certified by

Johnston County Board of Elections

Smithfield, NC – Today at 11:00am the Johnston County Board of Elections certified the May 8th primary election results with the exception of the Johnston County Board of Education primary.

The Johnston County Board of Elections was notified by the North Carolina State Board of Elections on May 17, 2018 at approximately 5:46pm that the primary ballot used could have an issue that required the review of the nonpartisan primary for the Johnston County Board of Education.  The ballot used was prepared and submitted by the Johnston County Board of Elections on March 16, 2018 for approval by the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

The State Board advised last night that the ballot included only eight candidates, and without legislative authority to the contrary, the primary may not have been proper.  In reviewing the matter the Johnston County Board of Elections determined the primary should not have been held and the results of the Johnston County Board of Education primary should not be certified.

As a result, all eight Board of Education candidates will proceed to the general election in November 2018.
