Persian Gulf War Veteran Fact Sheet

Public Law 102-58 established a Persian Gulf War period of service that affected persons serving on active duty on August 2, 1990. Public Law 102-585, Title VII, Persian Gulf War Veteran's Health Status Act of November 4, 1992 mandated the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to establish and maintain a Persian Gulf Registry and provide health examinations and counseling for eligible veterans. Since this program was established, 719 veterans have received examinations at this facility using the protocol developed by the Environment Agents Service, Veterans Health Administration. 

Persian Gulf veterans who desire to have their name placed on the Persian Gulf Registry must have an examination completed, if one was not completed by the Department of Defense before their discharge from military service. To schedule a Persian Gulf Registry examination contact Troy L. Graggs, Persian Gulf Coordinator or Belinda Johnson by calling (919) 286-0411, extension 6257. An examination will be scheduled with our Environmental Physician Assistant, Meg McCormack, PA as soon as possible.  

Eligibility Criteria

Persian Gulf Registry examinations will be provided to veterans who served on active military duty in Southwest Asia during Persian Gulf War between August 2, 1990, and the official termination date (to be established). Veterans that served in one or more of the following areas are eligible for examination and inclusion in the Persian Gulf Registry:  

  • Iraq  
  • Kuwait  
  • Saudi Arabia  
  • The neutral zone (between Iraq and Saudi Arabia)  
  • Bahrain  
  • Qatar  
  • The United Arab Emirates  
  • Oman  
  • Gulf of Aden  
  • Gulf of Oman  
  • Water of the  
  • Persian Gulf  
  • Arabian Sea  
  • Red Sea

Veterans seeking care for conditions related to their service in the Persian Gulf may be authority waives of copayment requirement under certain circumstances. Treatment can be provided, without charge, to veterans for conditions that the treating physician medically determines is possibly related to the veteran's Persian Gulf service according to Public Law 103-210, December 20, 1993.
