Johnston County Public Utilities Sewer Main Cleaning Notice

For Immediate Release:       October 14, 2019

The Johnston County Department of Public Utilities is scheduled to clean sanitary sewer mains through December 14, 2019.  This preventative maintenance will occur at various areas within the sewer system including Summerwind Plantation, Village at Cleveland Springs, Commerce Business Park, Weston Woods, Broadmoor, Patriots Pointe, 319 Commercial Park, Beaver Run Commercial Park, Clearwater and Johnston Farms.

The cleaning process will improve the sewer’s performance and significantly reduce the chance for future sewer back-ups and related problems.  The sanitary sewer lines are cleaned using high performance sewer cleaning equipment.  A cleaning nozzle is propelled from one manhole to the next using water under high pressure.  The nozzle is then pulled back to the starting manhole.  As the nozzle is pulled back, water scours the inside of the sanitary sewer pipe.  Any debris in the pipe is pulled back with the water.  The debris is removed from the manhole with a vacuum unit.

During cleaning of sanitary sewer lines, air occasionally vents into a home through the sanitary sewer service line and ventilation system.  When this happens, water in the toilet bowl or floor drains, can bubble or surge and, in rare instances, splash out of the bowl or drain.  The water that could come from this type of incident is from the bowl or drain itself.  Therefore, when the cleaning occurs in your neighborhood, you may wish to keep the lid of your toilet bowls down to minimize the water splashing from your toilet, and cover the floor drains in your basement.

The cleaning process may also cause a vacuum in the sewer.  This will not affect most homes, but some homes that have inadequate or partially blocked drain vents may be affected.  The vacuum may cause “P-traps” (the little S shaped bend in the pipe under sinks and drains) to dry out.  Should you notice a sewer odor resulting from this, run water in your drains to re-fill the P-traps.
