Winter Weather Preparedness Power & Heating Your Home

With winter weather comes the threat of power outages, extremely cold temperatures, and a need to stay warm. Generators are an easy way to provide the power you need to heat your home during an emergency. Follow these tips to make sure that you stay safe and warm.

When Running a Generator

    • Keep the generator OUTSIDE and AT LEAST 10 FEET from your home.
    • Keep the generator away from windows. Make sure exhaust is not making its way into your home.
    • Keep and store fuel for your generator in a PROPER AND SAFE CONTAINER.
    • SHUT OFF the generator before refueling. Follow instructions for refueling & maintenance.

Carbon Monoxide

    • Using generators creates a risk for CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. Make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector that is installed and working properly.
    • Install your detector lower to the ground and AT LEAST 10 FEET from your fire place.
    • NEVER use a stove/oven to heat your home, and NEVER let your vehicle run in an unventilated or closed garage.
