Recycling Information


 

 Recycling in Johnston County

Currently, recycling is voluntary and is recommended for all county residents. Bins are available at the convenience sites and at the landfill for anyone who wishes to recycle selected items. You do not need to have a Solid Waste Decal to recycle. There is no charge for recycling.

How to Recycle at the Convenience Sites

RECYCLING AT THE CONVENIENCE CENTERS IS FREE. Bins are available at the Convenience Centers and Landfill at no charge for anyone who wishes to recycle selected items. All customers with large volumes should contact the Department of Solid Waste Services at 919-938-4750.

The following items are accepted in the commingled recycling containers:

Plastic food and beverage containers: Symbols #1, #2,  screw/snap/pop-top containers, pigmented plastic containers, such as milk jugs and beverage bottles. All plastic containers must be empty and free of food debris and all other contaminating material. NO plastic bags, microwave dinner trays, motor oil containers, paint containers, or herbicide or pesticide containers are allowed.

Corrugated cardboard: Cardboard must be flattened and free from food debris, styrofoam, wood packing material, and all other contaminating material.

Paperboard: Cereal boxes, shoe boxes, tissue boxes, paper towel spools, poster board, etc. All paper fiber must be free of food debris and all other contaminating material.

Mixed paper: Newsprint, magazines, catalogs, telephone books, printer paper, copier paper, paper bags, mail and all other office paper without wax liners. All paper fiber must be free of food debris and other contaminating materials. No shredded paper is allowed.

Aluminum food and beverage containers: Cans, plates, and trays only. All aluminum items must be empty and free of food debris. NO aluminum doors or windows.

Metal food cans: Iron cans, tin cans, and bi-metal cans only. All cans must be empty and free of food debris. NO scrap steel, paint cans, household items such as cooking pots, toasters, coat hangers, etc.

The following items are accepted in segregated containers: 

Tires - Limit 4 per week. Tractor tires and large truck tires are not accepted at the centeres but are accepted at the Landfill. Customer must unload their own tires.

Appliances - Limit of two per week at the Convenience Center. Customer is responsible for unloading the appliance. Appliances should be empty of food or trash.

Lead Batteries - Limit of three per week at the Convenience Center.

Waste Motor Oil - Limit of five gallons per week at the Convenience Center.

Used Oil Filters - Limit of three per week at the Convenience Center.

TV's and COMPUTER EQUIPMENT ONLY - Limit 3 per week. Residential customers only.

SCRAP METAL

 

NOTE:  Some items are not accepted at the Convenience Centers and MUST be taken to the Landfill. View the Learn about the Landfill page for a list of items that must be taken to the Landfill.

How to Recycle at the Landfill Facility

Glass bottles at Landfill only: Brown, clear, and green only. All glass containers must be empty and free of food debris. NO glass cookware, bakeware, ceramics, porcelain, window glass, automobile glass, light bulbs, or mirrors.

Tires - Limit 4 per week. Tractor tires and large truck tires are not accepted at the centeres but are accepted at the Landfill. Customer must unload their own tires.

Appliances - Limit of two per week at the Convenience Center. Customer is responsible for unloading the appliance. Appliances should be empty of food or trash.

How to Recycle with Curbside Pickup

Some of the private, curbside trash pickup companies in the County offer recycling pickup along with the trash pickup. Contact your private trash pickup company for more details on their services.
