Notice Regarding Public Water Supply - Water Distribution System Change from Johnston East to Johnston West - Disinfection Change from Chlorine to Chloramines

On July 17, 2023 and July 24, 2023, Johnston County will convert portions of the water distribution system from Johnston East to Johnston West.  This will change the disinfectant in the water supply from chlorine to chloramines (combination of chlorine and ammonia).  This modification is intended to benefit the service areas by reducing the levels of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the system, while still providing protection from waterborne disease.

It is important for anyone dependent on kidney dialysis machines to recognize this change of disinfectants and consult with their health care professional.  Furthermore, chloraminated water may be toxic to some fish.  If you have a fish tank, additional treatment modifications may be required.

Most customers will not notice a difference in their water, but some may detect slight taste and odor changes.  The County will conduct water main flushing in these areas when the supply modifications are made.  The flushing modifications may result in some minor and temporary discoloration of water that does not affect water quality.

Any customers experiencing water quality issues that cannot be cleared by flushing the lines inside the home or customers with questions, should contact Johnston County Public Utilities at 919-989-5075.
